Hallo you all !

Here in Germany all "much-hair-dog owners" are very impressed with a new tool coming from USA. The Furminator.
Especially Sib. Husky owners report that the furminator takes MUCH hair out of the dogs...and the coat seems to be perfect after treatment. (...and by the way....cups of coffee are without doghair then :D  )
I know here is a proffesional groomer....

Can you tell me, Lynn (and shure all others who know this tool), how you think about the furminator ?
Do you know this tool?...and can you recommend this to dog owners?

I am a bit bemused that there are blades (knifes) inside. Is it not possible that the hair/coat gets irreversible damage?

Thanks a lot

Adele

I LOVE my Furminator grooming too!!! (I have two of them...)

They are an expensive tool, but I think it's worth it. I find they can get hair off a dog when a comb, rake or brush just isn't pulling off anything. They work really great on my basset hounds! In fact I might like them better for short coated dogs. A really long-hair husky or a collie I find a comb, rake or brush to be a better tool to start with. I use the Furminator as the last touch-up tool.

The teeth do have sharpened edges in between, but I don't see any coat damage with repeated use. Now, granted, I'm not furminating my huskies three times a day, either! (I'm lucky if I get each of them furminated three times a year!)

They now have knock-off tools, (Furminator look-alikes) I haven't tried any of those...

The blades on the Furminator are small enough that they only grab the loose hair. They don't actually cut any hair at all...they grab and pull out, so you don't get choppy edges. That's why you can't see damage to the coat. I suppose you could pull out too much hair...but that would only happen on a dog with a skin condition that would allow the hair to pull out, or if you Furminated for too long...which, well, I don't have time to do that usually!

Yes. I heartily recommend this tool!

Thanks a lot, Lynn, for your post!
So maybe I´ll order a furminator for Adele (since she has relatively short coat - so it should work on her).....and for less hair in my coffee :-)

Any other people here who have experiences with the furminator?

Adele

I just wanted to reiterate that the Furminator is the best grooming tool we've tried! We could fill a pillow with the hair we pull off Nadie every time, and we try to do it about once a month.

Just be careful how often you use it because it can irritate their skin a little. When we first got Nadie, she had never been brushed or washed, so we tried to use it every few days, but you could tell she hated it. Now, she knows it's just a monthly occurance that she can deal with.

Also, don't push too hard! You barely need to put any effort into it and it'll pick up tons of hair.

Look online, too, before you buy one full price! We got our large one for $20 on EBay! It saved us a lot of money.

Best of luck!

A friend of mine bought a Furminator from me. She has 4 Huskies 2 of which is very long coat Sibe's. She says that it's not working on the 10cm long hair? But well I LOVE my furminator!!!!
